Winooski High School ML Programs

WHS Newcomer Program

• A sheltered classroom for newcomer MLs entering high school
• This class is open to students who have entered the US within the last year and have had interrupted or limited schooling.  Students are assessed with the WIDA Screener and a local English language screener to be considered for placement in this class.
• These students learn basic social and academic language, including the language and content of reading, math, social studies and science.  They receive 2 blocks of language and literacy instruction a day and their math and science classes are co-taught by an ML teacher a content area teacher. Additionally, these students focus on specific school readiness skills in a sheltered environment to support their English language skills and their socio-emotional needs as they acclimate to US public schools.
• They participate in mainstream advisory and elective classes

ML Language Classes

• High School MLs are placed in an ML language class based on their language proficiency level.  This placement is determined by their proficiency on the WIDA ACCESS test, local assessments and performance on class proficiencies.   

Content Area Classes Support

• High School MLs are placed in a variety of content area classes.  Some of these classes are co-taught by an ML and a content area teacher to better support students’ language learning needs.
