Winooski School District

Welcome to Winooski School District!

Encompassing a little more than one mile square, Winooski is the smallest geographic school district in Vermont, and for many reasons, is a very special place for learning. Housed within a single building complex, grades PreK through 12, the small size of the Winooski schools helps to create a positive and caring environment where every student’s success is important. We offer our students a full range of academic studies and extracurricular activities and hold high standards for excellence in instruction, curriculum, and assessment.

All students will graduate from the Winooski School District (WSD) college and career ready at a cost supported by a majority of the Winooski community. WSD students will lead healthy, productive and successful lives and engage with their local and global community.

Land Statement:

The Winooski School lies within Wôbanakik, The Land of the Dawn, and sits on the high lands on the north bank of the Winoskitekw (Winooski) River. The Abenakis named this river for the wild onions growing along its banks. The Winoskitekw headwater lies in the Vermont town of Cabot in the Askaskwiwajoak (Green Mountains) and snakes its way west to Bitawbagw, the Waters Between (Lake Champlain). Winooski School District sits on the unceded, traditional, and contemporary homelands of the Winooskik band of the Wabanaki, People of the First Light, or Dawnland. The Wabanaki have served as the stewards of Wôbanakik since the beginning of time. We encourage you to include stories, voices, and input of this land and its people as you develop your instructional materials.

This Land Statement is part of the WSD truth and reconciliation process and was created under the generous guidance of Aimee Arandia Østensen of Shelburne Farms.
